SPECIAL CRAWFORD AUTO-AVIATION MUSEUM ANNOUNCEMENT.

The Lower Crawford Gallery is under renovation and currently unavailable. With generous funding from the State of Ohio, the work to renovate the lower gallery of the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum is underway. In partnership with AECOM, WRHS will complete both aesthetic and critical infrastructure upgrades to a space that, with few exceptions, has not been altered or restored since its construction in 1965. Follow us on on social media or join our News for updates on progress and reopening details! Read more about plans for the lower gallery renovation here.

The main level of the Crawford is open featuring Open Road: The Lure of Motorcycling in Ohio, which features 3 dozen amazing motorcycles with ties to NE OH. Additionally, the rest of the Cleveland History Center offers a number of experiences for audiences of all ages and special interests including the Euclid Beach Park Grand Carousel, the Chisholm Halle Costume Wing, Women & Politics and the Historic Mansions.

The Cleveland History Center (CHC) headquarters for Western Reserve Historical Society, houses exhibits that tell the story of Northeast Ohio through items, documents and artifacts from a variety of collections. Through the use of its vast and varied collections in the areas of family history, community history, entrepreneurship, and technological innovation, Cleveland History Center provides the public with a much-needed sense of place in today’s mobile society, and a base for learning about invention and ingenuity that can be transferred into modern economic expansion.

What is the CHC doing to improve my safety?

WRHS’s top priority is the safety of its visitors, volunteers, and staff. To deliver a low-contact, high-quality visitor experience, the institution developed an internal task force and consulted with health authorities and peer institutions across the country to establish coronavirus protocols and site-specific safety measures. This includes enhanced daily cleaning, antibacterial solution stations throughout the museum, and promoting social distancing.

Is the museum mandating face coverings?

Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, WRHS has followed State of Ohio and CDC guidance to

develop policies for the health and safety of our team, vendors, consultants, volunteers, interns, and

guests. Guidance from the State, CDC, and a host of health and safety organizations is changing daily.

For the current WRHS Mask Policy, click here.

CHC is complying with all Ohio and CDC guidelines to maintain a safe operation for guests and staff during this pandemic. Visiting the museum will look different than it has in the past and for these safety reasons not all galleries will be open or staffed in our first phase of reopening. We thank you for your support and patience during this time.

Open Road: The Lure of Motorcycling in Ohio

With generous funding from the State of Ohio, the work to renovate the lower gallery of the Crawford Auto Aviation Museum is underway. In partnership with AECOM, WRHS will complete both aesthetic and critical infrastructure upgrades to a space that, with few exceptions, has not been altered or restored since its construction in 1965.

Improvements bring the existing gallery to a higher level of finish consistent with the museum’s main floor that was restored in 2013 with public and private support. Improving the lower Crawford gallery’s ‘core and shell’ transforms its appearance, increases the safety and accessibility of the space for public and private use, increases the amount of space available for vehicles, and is the foundation for future exhibits and programs.

Please note that the lower level of the Crawford Gallery will be closed for public use, including facility rentals and private events, from December 1, 2021 – summer 2022. WRHS expects the lower gallery to reopen this summer, 2022.

Plans to reinstall, reimagine and populate the Crawford lower gallery are in progress. The lower gallery will have a fresh appearance and the collection will be highlighted as never before. At the same time, we will continue to present exciting exhibits in the main gallery. “A Century of the American Motorcycle” will be on view through March 20, 2022. After, “The Lure of the Open Road,”, an extraordinary exhibit of motorcycles from Northern Ohio collections will open, sharing main floor galleries with a curator’s selection from our automobile collection.

When complete, the Crawford lower Gallery will be refreshed, more accessible, updated, with critical infrastructure and environmental upgrades.

Thank you for your patience and flexibility during renovations.
